A-Z While Attending a Sporting Event

October 16, 2017- Growing up in Northeast Ohio, I have learned three things: 1. Ohio weather is unpredictable, there could be frost on your car in the morning and you could be in a tank top by 3pm. 2. Nothing is given, everything is earned. 3. Sports are a way of life. Below are my A-Z tips to get you through any sporting event, professional or amateur.

ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER.

Be sure to check the weather the night before and the morning of the event, especially if it is outside. You don’t want to be sitting in a soaking wet seat in the rain when it is 50 degrees. You also don’t want to be sweating in three jackets while the sun beats down on you. Ohio weather is unpredictable, which means planning is key!

BRING BACK-UP CLOTHES.

So maybe the Ohio weather got the best of you…you don’t have to worry about that because you brought an extra t-shirt to change in to in case you were too hot in your sweatshirt! If it is cold out, layers are key!

CHECK YOUR SEATS BEFORE YOU ARRIVE.

This mainly deals with professional sports, but make sure to check which section you are seated so you know which entrance to use! You do not want to be wandering around the stadium/arena trying to find your section when you could be missing out on all of the pre-game activities, or even worse, the game itself!

DRESS ACCORDINGLY.

It is a sporting event. There is no need to be in a dress and heels or a three-piece suit (unless you are working or you’re trying to impress someone). Sporting events are made to be entertaining and relaxing (well, not always), so get comfy and enjoy it!

EDUCATE YOURSELF.

I can admit that there are still rules within certain sports that I still do not understand, even after watching the game for years. Looking up the rules of the game before going can help you to understand the game and not be sitting there confused the whole time! Besides, some people will get annoyed if you are asking questions every three minutes…

FAN EXPERIENCE.

Make sure to take advantage of everything the event has to offer! Whether you are at a professional baseball game and there are sponsors giving away free merchandise, or a high school football game where the cheerleaders are walking around with 50/50 raffle tickets, take part! One of the biggest things people in the sport industry prides themselves on is delivering the best fan experience.

GO WITH FRIENDS.

Anything is better when experienced with your best pals! Bring them along to enhance the fun, and sometimes, even get discounts on tickets if there is a group of you!

HANG OUT AROUND THE STADIUM/ARENA.

Stadiums and arenas are built around fan comfort and experience. With updates being made each year, there are new vendors everywhere you look! With these expansions there is everything from a Build-a-Bear (mascot) store to local restaurant stands to craft breweries!

INTERACT WITH THOSE SEATED NEAR YOU.

Talking with the people seated around you is a great way to make friends, and gives you someone else to talk to! Chat about the amazing play someone just made or gossip about the guy two sections over that has had a few too many. Either way, being comfortable with those around you will make the experience much more enjoyable.

JUST GO WITH THE FLOW.

Weather can play a vital role in the sport industry, especially for outdoor sports such as baseball and football. Sometimes, there will be weather delays. The best way to deal with this is just go with the flow of your group. Sometimes you wait it out, other days you cut your losses.

KEEP IN MIND THOSE AROUND YOU.

People are known to enjoy an adult beverage or two at sporting events. Some people, however, may have a few too many. Be courteous to those around you, as they paid the same money you did to watch the same game. They are there to enjoy themselves, and sometimes people may take it too far. Just remember to be pleasant and have fun, that is why you’re there!

LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!

Cheering on your team is one of the best ways to inspire them to play their best. The players are there because they want to win for your city, so show them support! But remember, always keep it positive!!

MANAGE YOUR TIME.

Be sure to manage your time getting to the stadium, parking, and leaving. If you are worried about getting stuck in traffic before or after the game, make sure to allow yourself enough time to get out of the stadium and into the parking lot.

NO PLACE FOR SORE LOSERS.

No one likes a sore loser, especially at a professional game! While you may be upset about your team losing, there is no reason to take it out on other people. Taking it out on other people ruins their time as well, and could get you into some serious trouble!

OPPORTUNITIES ARE EVERYWHERE!

There are many opportunities to let your voice be heard at the stadium, as well as cool opportunities such as player meet and greets or going on the field! Be sure to take advantage of any promotions the organization is offering for that day!

PREPARE FOR STADIUM PRICING.

Because the sport industry is such a thriving business, they are able to keep their prices inside the stadium high, because the demand is high. If you are looking for a low-cost outing, be sure to eat before you arrive at the stadium, or plan your visit for a night where they have promotions such as dollar hot dogs or discount beer specials. This is an effective way to make sure you enjoy your time without breaking the bank!

QUESTIONS ARE OKAY.

Lost? Looking for your seats? Can’t find the bathroom? Wondering who is up to bat? There are customer service representatives throughout the stadium that are there to help you. Feel free to ask questions, they are getting paid to find you answers!

READY, SET, PAY ATTENTION!

Always, always, always make sure you are paying attention whenever you are near the playing field or court. This seems to pertain mainly to baseball, but there are always objects flying into the stands from the field. Whether it is a baseball coming off of a bat, a shanked field goal attempt, or LeBron James flying into the seats going for a ball, sporting events can be dangerous if you are not paying attention.

STAY IN YOUR SEAT, PLEASE!

There is nothing that people hate more than those around them who continuously get up, leave, and then come back. You paid good money for that seat to watch the game, make sure you are taking advantage of it and not wandering the stadium all day!

TRY SOMETHING NEW.

It is becoming popular within the sport industry to have outrageous stadium food, ranging from specialty hot dogs to nachos in a helmet to a specialty craft beer. The stadium is more than likely the only place you will be able to try it, so be adventurous!

UNDERSTAND THERE ARE OTHERS AROUND YOU.

One of the most annoying things in sports is when you are surrounded by people who are loud, rude, and sometimes belligerent. These types of people ruin the game for everyone else. Be understanding that there are others around you, sometimes those who are opponents. They paid the same price as you did for the tickets and have every right to enjoy the game as you are. Make sure to be respectful!

VISION IS KEY.

When picking your seats, make sure you are seated somewhere that you are able to see! You are paying good money for that seat, you want to make sure you are able to actually see what you came to see!

WATCH THE GAME.

You paid for the ticket to watch the game, make sure to actually watch the game! There are cool entertainment aspects that go along with it, so be sure not to miss them!

eXCITE YOUR TEAM!

Teams count on their fans to be loud and excited during the game, home field advantage is a real thing! Make sure to be loud, be proud, but be positive!!

YOU ARE THE PRIORITY.

On gamedays, the fans and their experience are the main priority of the organization. They want to keep the fans happy and engaged in order to keep them coming back. If you had an issue or found a flaw, be sure to let them know (in a polite and professional manner) so they are able to fix the issue!

ZERO TO HERO.

The best way to impress someone on a date (well, at least in my book) is to take them to a super fun, upbeat sporting event! I know it is not some people’s cup of tea, but a good time is a good time! Show them a good time and you could go from zero to hero really quick!

Hope these were helpful for when you attend your next sporting event! Take advantage of the opportunities and be loud, be proud, be positive! Show off your team spirit! Go Raiders!!!
