Symposium Sessions
First Ladies, Suffrage, & Political Activism
Explore the undulations of first lady engagement in national politics by looking at four distinct time periods: 1) the founding years, 2) the era of the “new woman,” 3) the post-suffrage era, and 4) the modern feminist era.
First Ladies and the Media
This session will discuss how press framing of first ladies as models of American womanhood has – and has not – shifted from the 19th to the 20th and now into the 21st century.
Studying the Impact of the First Lady Role
Beyond the fashion and the White House renovations, first ladies provide critical insight into American politics, gender norms, communication, culture, and society that researchers can explore to better understand our nation’s history.
The Future of the First Lady
The duties and expectations of American first ladies have evolved over the years, often reflecting cultural changes in women’s personal and professional roles. By addressing a number of questions, the panelists hope to engage in a lively dialogue with audience members about the future of the first lady institution. Tickets are limited. Students must provide a valid ID at the symposium check-in. Volunteer tickets are available for active National First Ladies' Library volunteers only.
