Bender's Tavern
Overview
Since opening its doors in 1902, Bender’s Tavern has been an integral part of the Canton community. Now a registered landmark, this historic tavern has welcomed generations of guests from all walks of life.
In 1932, John Jacob purchased the restaurant from its original owner, Ed Bender, beginning a family legacy that has spanned four generations. His son, Wilbur, later took the helm, followed by the third generation, Jerry and Jim Jacob. Today, Bender’s Tavern is proudly led by Jon Jacob, continuing a tradition of hospitality, quality, and community involvement that has defined the restaurant for nearly a century.
Each generation has contributed to the restaurant’s rich history while preserving the traditions that have made Bender’s a beloved Canton institution. From its original recipes and historic atmosphere to its commitment to exceptional service, Bender’s offers guests a dining experience that blends timeless charm with culinary excellence. Signature dishes such as Camp Kagel Walleye, lobster, Bender’s Fries, and turtle soup remain cherished staples, enjoyed by patrons for generations.
As Bender’s has evolved over the years, it has remained steadfast in its dedication to quality ingredients and craftsmanship. Today, that commitment continues through its partnership with Wulf Fish, a premier seafood supplier established in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1926. This longstanding relationship helps ensure that guests enjoy the highest quality seafood available.
Complementing the cuisine is an impressive beverage program featuring creative cocktails, classic favorites, and an extensive wine cellar. Bender’s Tavern has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for more than a decade, reflecting its commitment to offering a thoughtfully curated, value-driven wine list.
With deep connections to Canton’s history, the NFL, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Bender’s Tavern is more than a restaurant—it is a living piece of the community’s story. The memories shared by friends, families, visitors, and longtime patrons have become an invaluable part of its legacy, enriching the spirit of the establishment and creating traditions that continue today.
The Jacob family and the entire Bender’s Tavern team look forward to celebrating 125 years of excellence while continuing to serve future generations with the same dedication, hospitality, and quality that have defined Bender’s since 1902.
