The Yankee Peddler Festival has been a staple in Stark County for over 40 years! This traditional fall festival offers unique crafts and entertainment. There is something for everyone to enjoy, from shopping the numerous artisans, enjoying the entertainment, or eating the delicious food - you won't be let down!
Yankee Peddler is held on the first three weekends of September, open on Saturdays & Sundays from 10:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. The event is at Clay's Park in Lawrence Township - just outside of Canal Fulton! It is clear this is a favorite, busy, and thriving event from the ticket lines when I arrived! Thankfully, they move quick because you can smell the tasty food and open hearth fires from the gates. If fall could have a scent - it's embodied at Yankee Peddler!
I entered at Gate 3 where I was immediately drawn to the petting zoo! The kiddos were loving the animals, and the animals were loving the cool day in the shade. There were baby goats, a beautiful llama, and donkeys! You could also go for a trail ride on some of the horses they had brought for the occasion - even the mini-horse had a mini-saddle! I'm an animal lover so I was glad to see these animals were enjoying the attention!
My recommendation is to check out the vendor list, the map, and take a first tour around just to get the lay of the land and compare your favorite wares for buying! Then, go back through again. There is just so much to look at and take in! You could people watch, and "craft" watch for hours - even the Apple Fritters stand featured period-clothes wearing people peeling and coring the apples up front! The dulcimer duo played their dulcimer and caught the attention of all those passing by - as well as the blacksmith who had his fire roaring as you listen to the "ping, ping, ping" of his hammer on the metal. Trust me - you're going to spend a lot of time just watching, smelling, and enjoying the outdoors at this festival!
The artisans are many, and they are diverse! You will find everything from seasonal decor, to paintings, wood carvings, handmade candles, metal lawn art, pottery, bird houses, photography, jewelry, and more! Much, much more! Check out the Yankee Peddler Artisan List here! You'll notice the list is divided by each area on the map!
You will also work up an appetite - which you will be thankful for because the food is delicious! The smell alone will have you salivating! This is not
your ordinary fair food - it is far from it! Enjoy turkey ruebens, creamed chicken and biscuits, roast beef, corn on the cob, and pirogies! That's definitely not all, and you should also save room for dessert: homemade apple dumplings and fritters, fudge, peanut brittle, cobbler and pie - yum!
The last photo I shared may be my favorite. When I was a kid, my family always went to the Yankee Peddler. Life got busy, and it's been a few years since I've gone... but one of my favorite memories was the folklore of the trolls! "Beware of Troll under Bridge" it reads. Maybe it was my natural curiosity, and my parents egging me on, but I always thought there were really trolls living under that bridge! It's good to see it's still there for the next generation.
The website for The Yankee Peddler website has artisan, food, and entertainment lists to plan your day, or just wing it and wander! You could spend the entire day there - and I urge you to plan on it!
