The Story of Umbrella Alley in Louisville
Jul 04, 2020
A Colorful Destination with a Big Heart—and a Deep History
Nestled in the heart of downtown Louisville, Ohio, Umbrella Alley has become one of Stark County’s most vibrant and visited attractions. What began as a creative way to brighten a quiet alley has evolved into a powerful symbol of community pride, public art, and local history.
A SKY FULL OF COLOR
Inspired by European art installations, Umbrella Alley launched in 2020 with a canopy of suspended umbrellas—bright, joyful, and instantly iconic. Led by community organizers and supported by local volunteers and businesses, the project revitalized downtown Louisville and invited visitors to walk beneath a whimsical wave of color.
But this is no ordinary art alley. Over time, it has grown into a living canvas, showcasing rotating murals, interactive features, and themed exhibits that speak to both the spirit and story of Stark County.

NEW for 2025: Honoring Stark County’s Revolutionary Roots
This summer, Umbrella Alley is unveiling Part 1 of a two-part patriotic art exhibit that connects the vibrant visuals of the alley with the founding history of Louisville, Stark County, and the United States itself.
Louisville is proudly known as “Constitution Town”, a title earned thanks to local resident Olga Weber, who successfully petitioned Congress in 1952 to create Constitution Day, celebrated nationally on September 17. To this day, Louisville remains one of the few places in America that commemorates the date with deep civic pride.
This year's installation draws a direct connection between Stark County’s Revolutionary War namesake, Gen. John Stark, and his wife, Molly Stark, for whom Molly Stark Hospital was named. During the pivotal Battle of Bennington, Gen. Stark famously rallied his soldiers by saying:
“There are your enemies, the Red Coats and the Tories. They are ours, or this night Molly Stark sleeps a widow!”
His troops claimed a resounding victory—and later, Stark County was named in his honor.
To commemorate this rich history, Umbrella Alley will feature:
· 120 red, white, and blue umbrellas suspended in a bold patriotic display
· A streamer art project forming the Bennington Flag, symbolizing America’s fight for independence
· A visual evolution that will transition to the modern American flag design in 2026, celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary
This immersive art experience connects past to present—bringing Revolutionary War heritage into public consciousness through creative, community-led expression. It’s a history lesson and public art exhibit all in one.
See the transformation in action and don’t miss the display in person—especially on Constitution Day, September 17, when the town comes alive with celebrations.

Built by Community, Loved by All
Umbrella Alley is made possible by donations, sponsorships, and an incredible volunteer base. Local businesses, schools, and civic groups regularly participate in decorating, painting, and maintaining the space. In doing so, Umbrella Alley has become a model of how small communities can harness creativity to boost tourism and local pride.
Annual events, including mural unveilings, small business markets, and summer celebrations, have made Umbrella Alley a must-see stop on any visit to Louisville.
