The Women who elevated American art.
"Shattered Glass: The Women who Elevated American Art" introduces us to female artists, largely ignored for decades and more in American history, and displays some of their greatest, sometimes forcibly hidden, artistic creations. A particular focus of the exhibit explores women who faced adversity due to not only their gender, but also race, sexuality, or even economic status.
Visit Canton's team got to meet with Christy Davis and Kaleigh Pisani of the Canton Museum of Art to record our inaugural episodes of a new series: On Exhibit in Stark County. This new series of social media reels gives you an intimate look at the exhibit and info straight from curators, artists, and others - almost like a personal tour, just for you!
We explore the works of two Ohio female artists, as well as the work of Claude Hirst, born Claudine, who changed her name and artistic subject matter in order to have her work taken seriously but still displaying feminine touches in her newly-male-appreciated-works. The series also explores the power of artistic expression when other avenues of communication are impossible, such as the story of artist Judith Scott. We also learn about how women artists were not taken as seriously as their male contemporaries and how these women strove to shatter a glass ceiling keeping their work in the shadows. These stories of powerful expression in the face of society are beautiful curated by the team at the Canton Museum of Art, and you can explore these pieces and learn more about the stories of the women who elevated American art now through March 1st, 2026.
