Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail

25 miles of the iconic Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail runs through Stark County. Begin your hiking or biking adventure at any one of the 14 trailheads. Shady, flat terrain parallels the Tuscarawas River through deciduous forests and rural and urban landscapes.

The 87-miles of towpath trail extends through Tuscarawas, Stark, Summit, and Cuyahoga Counties, following the 101-mile trek through the National Heritage Area as closely as possible along the original path which mules pulled canal boats full of passengers and commerce up and down the historic Ohio & Erie Canal from 1827 to 1913.

Begin your journey at the southernmost trailhead, Canal Lands Park and wander through the historic Village of Zoar's historic gardens. Continue into the historic canal town of Canal Fulton and take a ride on the replical canal boat the St. Helena III. Continue north through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and onward to Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland.
