Ohio Goes to the Movies

Ohio’s contributions to the movies will be celebrated through a statewide movie series with communities across Ohio hosting free movie showings throughout 2026. Films cover many genres in a variety of venues.
Check out the movies hitting the big screen in Stark County as a part of the Ohio Goes to the Movies series!
Major League (1989) | March 1st
Kicking the series off in Stark County is the baseball classic, Major League! This star-studded film follows the Cleveland Indians who have just landed an owner looking to put together the worst team possible in hopes of moving the team to Florida. Against all the odds the team finds themselves pushing for the postseason in this tale that is sure to make you laugh!
Other than featuring the Cleveland Indians this was filmed in Ohio and is directed by Ohio native, David S. Ward (South Euclid). You can catch this film for free at Cinemark Tinseltown North Canton & XD on March 1st at 4:00 PM.
Ramona and Beezus (2010) | June 5th
The series continues in Downtown Canton with a more family-friendly film, Ramona and Beezus! Starring Selena Gomez and Joey King this film follows Ramona, a mischievous girl who is trying to raise money to save her family home and while doing that keeps her sister Ramona on her toes.
The screenplay for Ramona and Beezus was co-written by Ohio native, Nick Pustay (Cleveland). You can catch this film for free at the Canton Palace Theatre on June 5th at 7:00 PM.
The Wizard of Oz (1939) | July 11th
Next we hop to the 1930s with the musical classic, The Wizard of Oz! Follow along with Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto as they go on a quest to meet the wizard in hopes to each be granted their greatest life desires!
The Wizard of Oz stars Cleveland native, Margaret Hamilton and Xenia native, Charley Grapewin. You can catch this film for free at the Lions Lincoln Theatre on July 11th at 7:00 PM.
Go Tigers! (2001) | August 15th
Relive the Massillon Tiger's 1999 football season when you see, Go Tigers! Catch this behind-the-scene look at a remarkable season carried by three emerging stars and the pride of an entire city!
Go Tigers was filmed in Massillon and spotlights the Tigers who live here in Stark County. You can catch this film for free at the Regal Great Escape in Massillon on August 15th at 6:30 PM.
Duel in the Sun (1946) | August 15th
The next film to hit the big screen is the classic western, Duel in the Sun! After Pearl loses her parents she moves in with her aunt where she falls for Lewt and after things don't work out it leads to a lovers duel.
Aunt Laura Belle is portrayed by Lillian Gish of Springfield and Massillon. You can catch Duel in the Sun for free at Kent State University Stark Campus on August 15th at 7:00 PM.
The Hit Situation | August 27th
The next showing will be The Hit Situation! A rapper finds himself intertwined in some legal trouble involving espionage and billions of dollars. Is he guilty? Is someone framing him? Or is something crazier going on?
The Hit Situation and produced and directed by Alliance native, Ben Patterson. You can catch it for free at the University of Mount Union on August 27th at 7:00 PM.
Broken Blossoms (1919) | September 12th
We jump back even further with the next installment with, Broken Blossoms from 1919! This story follows a Chinese immigrant store owner who is falling in love with a girl who is always in trouble with her dad. One day she faints in front of his store and he takes her in, but her dad is not happy to find this out.
This film also stars Ohio native, Lillian Gish. You can see it for free at the Canton Palace Theatre on September 12th at 7:00 PM.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) | Sept. 19th
Next we start a marathon weekend that is kicked off with, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid! A story filled with wild rides, fast-draws, train and bank robberies, love affairs, a new look on the outlaw life in Bolivia, and a memorable friendship between Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Butch Cassidy is played by Shaker Heights native and Kenyon alum, Paul Newman and the screenplay was written by Oberlin alum, William Goldman. You can catch this film for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 19th at 12:00 PM.
Unstoppable (2010) | September 19th
The next film in the marathon is, Unstoppable! When a umanned train begins going out of control a a duo of conductors is tasked with risking everything to get it stopped or the chemicals on board could decimate the nearby human life.
This film based on a true story was filmed in Ohio. You can catch it for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 19th at 1:30 PM.
Gone with the Wind (1939) | September 19th
The marathon continues with the classic, Gone with the Wind! Based on novel by Margaret Mitchell of the same title, this historical epic drama is set during the American Civil War and follows Scarlett's romantic pursuit of her cousins husband, Ashley.
This film stars Ohio natives, Clark Gable (Cadiz/Akron) and Robert Elliot (Columbus). You can see it for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 19th at 3:00 PM.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) | Sept. 19th
Day one of the marathon closes with the adventure film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade! This film follows the infamous Indiana Jones who is looking for his father after he goes missing looking for the holy grail. Following clues from his old man's notebook he goes on another adventure.
This film is directed by Cincinnati native Steven Spielberg. You can catch it for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 19th at 4:30 PM.
The Great Locomotive Chase (1956) | September 20th
Day two of the marathon kicks of with, The Great Locomotive Chase! A union spy is tasked with stealing a Confederate train during the Civil War and when the conductor begins to figure things out he looks to derail the plans before the train is delivered to the Union.
The subject of the film is based on Wilson Wright Brown, a native of Logan. You can catch the film for free at the Dennison Railroad Museum Depot on September 20th at 12:00 PM.
The Sting (1973) | September 20th
The next film featured in the series is the best picture winner, The Sting! After losing a mutual friend aspiring con men team up to get revenge on the crime boss responsible for the death. They come up with a huge plan to take him and as it begins to unfold, things start going away from the plan requiring some improvisation.
This film also stars Shaker Heights native and Kenyon alum, Paul Newman and was written by South Euclid native, David S. Ward. You can catch it for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 20th at 1:30 PM.
The Untouchables (1987) | September 20th
The series continues with 1987 crime classic, The Untouchables! This star-studded cast follows Eliot Ness who is obsessed with the idea of bringing down crime boss, Al Capone. Despite going against a corrupt police force, he will do what it takes to bring justice to Capone.
The subject of the film, Eliot Ness, is a native of Cleveland. You can catch it for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 20th at 3:00 PM.
Superman (2025) | September 20th
The marathon concludes with the latest film from DC, Superman! Catch the latest film to follow the Man of Steel in his battles with Lex Luthor who is hoping to take him down and keep him out of the way of his hijinx.
Superman was filmed in Cleveland and stars Cleveland native Isabel Merced. The character was also created by Cleveland natives Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. You can catch the action for free at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum on September 20th at 4:30 PM.
